Do you need to write a book introduction for a new edition of your book? Perhaps you’ve got an exciting new 10th or 20th-anniversary edition coming out soon. Creating a new introduction for an anniversary edition of your book is an excellent opportunity to reflect on the book’s journey, its impact, and the evolution of the topic over the years since it was first released.
Writing a new introduction for an anniversary edition is different to writing an introduction to the first edition of a book. Here’s an outline of what topics you might include in the new introduction, including several questions to help guide your writing process.
Suggested Outline
You don’t need to include everything included here; this is simply a list of sections you might want to include in your new book introduction. They might not all be relevant to your specific book.
Reflective Opening
Begin with a reflective tone, expressing your thoughts and feelings about reaching this significant milestone for your book. Share your initial motivations for writing the book and how you feel about its longevity and continued relevance. Why is this book still relevant? Explain that to your readers of this new edition. What initially inspired you to write this book, and how do you think that inspiration has held up since its publication?
Book’s Journey
Briefly recount the book’s journey from its inception to the present. Highlight the key milestones, including its initial publication, major accolades, translations into different languages, or special editions. You might want to celebrate how many thousands or tens of thousands of copies the book has sold over the years.

Impact on Readers
Discuss the impact the book has had on its readers. Include anecdotes or testimonials that illustrate how the book has influenced personal development for individuals. Here, you might want to include quotes from reader emails or stories of how the book has helped your own clients, if you work with people on the same topic. How has your book helped people? How has it changed their lives? Can you share a particularly memorable story or testimonial from a reader that highlights the book’s impact?
Personal Growth and Changes
Share how you, as the author, have grown or changed since the book’s original publication—especially in relation to the topic you write about in your book. You could include changes in your perspective, additional experiences, or new knowledge that has influenced your understanding of the book’s topic and themes.
How has your relationship to the subject matter changed or stayed the same over the years since you published the book? In what ways have you personally grown or changed since the book was first published, and how has this affected your view of the book’s themes? Looking back, is there anything in the original book that you would now challenge or view differently?
Updates and Additions
If applicable, highlight any updates, new chapters, or additional content included in the new edition and explain the rationale behind these additions. Are there any new insights or developments that you’ve incorporated into this new edition? Why was it important to include these new updates?

Relevance
What are some of the most significant challenges and opportunities for people today regarding the topic of your book, compared to when the book was first published? What advice would you give to a new picking up the book for the first time today? What do you envision for the future of the topics and issues you discussed in your book, and how does your book fit into that vision? How do you hope the book will continue to influence new generations of readers?
Gratitude and Acknowledgments
Express gratitude to your readers, supporters, and anyone who has contributed to the book’s success over the years.
Conclusion
You might want to end with the conclusion that what you’ve written in your book is just as important now as when you first wrote it (if not more). Explain why you’re relaunching the book with this new edition. Perhaps explain that it’s important for you to get the book out to as many people as possible, so you can help them with this topic. Invite them to read on, and wish them the best with whatever it is that the book will help them with.
This outline and the various questions for each section will hopefully provide a framework for crafting a meaningful and engaging introduction to the anniversary edition of your book. Reflecting on these questions should help you to enrich your new introduction and offer valuable insights to both new and returning readers as to why they should read this new edition.
The best of luck to you with your new book edition!
